Dagukong dà gǔ kōng ·

Location. On the back of the thumb, at the midpoint of the transverse crease of the interphalangeal joint.

The name is a description of the landmark: da means large, gu is bone, and kong is hollow or opening, so it is the hollow at the large knuckle, the single joint of the thumb. It is a point outside the fourteen channels. Like other points sited on a finger joint, classical writing records moxa here more often than needling, and it is one of several extra points on the hand that later literature discusses in the context of the eyes. That association is a matter of what is written, not of what has been shown: the classical record for this point is much thinner than for the channel points of the hand, its reported effects are not established by modern research, and this entry makes no claim of benefit.

Classical record · not a treatment recommendation. Needling technique is a licensed practitioner's skill and is out of scope here.
The point sits directly on the thumb joint, where the skin is thin and there is almost nothing between it and the bone. Moxibustion or needling here is a practitioner procedure with a real risk of burn or of irritating the joint, and a burn over a finger joint heals badly; this entry gives no depth and describes neither. What a reader can safely do is gentle pressure or pinching of the knuckle. Do not apply heat to the joint, and stop if there is pain, swelling or stiffness afterwards.
