Puhui San (Typha Ash and Talc Powder) pú huī sǎn · 蒲灰散

Safety. Two ingredients, one of which is not securely identified. That is worth putting in the first sentence rather than burying. 蒲灰 may be read as the ash of 香蒲 pollen — Typha, the cattail — or as burnt matting made from the same plant. Later commentators have offered further readings. This library records that the ambiguity exists and adjudicates nothing; a reader who needs one identity to be the right one will not find that here. The second ingredient is the reason this entry is read alongside the others in the batch. 滑石 is talc, a hydrated magnesium silicate. It is not 石膏, which is calcium sulfate, and the two are confused often enough that the distinction belongs on the page. Talc occurs in nature alongside asbestos, and asbestos contamination is a documented quality problem for talc of every grade; whether the pharmaceutical and cosmetic grades specifically carry that problem has been contested and litigated, and this library records that a controversy exists without treating it as settled. Talc is also not a substance that enters the body as nothing: the form of exposure that is documented to cause harm is inhalation and the application of powder to the perineal and genital area, not the drinking of it, and saying which route matters is the honest version of this note. What the line itself does is more interesting than either material. One sentence — 小便不利 — is followed immediately by three formulas, none of which shares an ingredient with the next, and no rule for picking one is supplied. A classical text that places three options side by side without a discriminator is asking the reader to notice the absence. This library notices it and does not fill it in. 小便不利 is also not one thing. It may be too little urine, oliguria, which is the earliest sign of acute kidney injury and matters because obstruction is reversible only while it is still being sought — stone, prostate, stricture, tumour, catheter. It may be difficulty emptying, which splits into obstructive and non-obstructive causes and is measured today with an ultrasound and a post-void residual rather than with a sentence. Or it may be frequency, urgency and burning — the picture called 淋 — which today is urinary tract infection, interstitial cystitis, stone, urethral syndrome, and, in an older person, an infection that presents as new confusion without a recorded fever.
