Blood-invigorating drug (quickening the blood and regulating the menses); traditionally also classed as soothing the Liver and dispersing depression

Chinese Rose Flower yuè jì huā · 月季花

Flos Rosae Chinensis — Rosa chinensis Jacq. (family Rosaceae), the dried flower or flower bud

Nature and flavour. Sweet, warm. Liver system.

The gentlest flower in this group, and the one whose classical indication is stated in emotional terms as well as gynaecological ones. It quickens the blood and regulates the menses, soothes the Liver and disperses depression, and is recorded for irregular or suppressed menstruation, for the distending chest and rib-side pain that the texts attribute to constrained Liver qi, and for the low spirits described in the same terms. It is also listed for swellings from knocks and falls, and it is a common ingredient in the compound formulas used for menstrual complaints in contemporary practice. The uses are recorded; the modern clinical evidence for them is limited and is not established.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. A mild blood mover, and still one to keep out of pregnancy — the classical sources avoid blood-quickening flowers in pregnancy as a class. Caution applies with heavy or prolonged periods, with a bleeding tendency, and with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. The practical hazard is not pharmacological. Florist and garden roses are not the drug: plants grown for their flowers are routinely sprayed with pesticides and fungicides that are not permitted on a medicinal crop, and cut roses may have been treated after cutting as well. The drug is a specified plant part bought through a medicinal supply chain, not a flower taken from a garden. Anyone who is pregnant, who has unexplained pelvic or menstrual bleeding, or whose low mood is persistent should be assessed rather than self-treated — heavy bleeding and low mood both have causes that need looking at, and a flower is not an answer to either. Any use belongs under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, and this page deliberately does not say how much to take.
