Blood-invigorating drug (quickening the blood and regulating the menses); traditionally also classed as promoting urination and reducing swelling

Lycopus Herb zé lán ·

Herba Lycopi — Lycopus lucidus Turcz. var. hirtus Regel (family Lamiaceae), the dried aerial parts

Nature and flavour. Bitter and acrid, slightly warm. Liver and Spleen systems.

A marsh plant used as a blood mover, and one of the few in this group that the texts also credit with moving water. It quickens the blood, regulates the menses and dispels stasis, promotes urination and reduces swelling, and it is recorded for irregular or suppressed menstruation, for abdominal pain after childbirth attributed to retained stasis, and for oedema and difficult urination. The combination is the point: where the classical description is of stasis and water together, this is the herb that gets named. Its reputation in Western herbal literature is a separate matter and is addressed in the caution below. The traditional uses are recorded; the modern clinical evidence for them is limited and is not established.

Safety. Two plants carry similar names and they are not interchangeable: TCM 泽兰 is Lycopus, while 佩兰 is Eupatorium fortunei, and the two have different traditional uses and different safety profiles. Buy it by the Latin name. As a blood mover it is avoided in pregnancy, and the same caution applies with heavy bleeding and with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. The separate concern comes from Western herbal literature, where the related Lycopus species — bugleweed — has a traditional reputation for acting on the thyroid and is listed by modern Western sources as one to avoid in hypothyroidism, in pregnancy and in breastfeeding. That is a different tradition from the Chinese one, but the genus is the same, and a person with a thyroid condition or on thyroid medication should not use this herb without their prescriber knowing. Oedema has causes — heart, kidney, liver, venous — that a diuretic herb does not address and that need a diagnosis. Any use belongs under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, and this page deliberately does not say how much to take.
