Blood-invigorating drug (quickening the blood and breaking stasis, cooling the blood, dispelling wind)

Campsis Flower líng xiāo huā ·

Flos Campsis — Campsis grandiflora (Thunb.) Loisel. (family Bignoniaceae), the dried flower. The related American species Campsis radicans is traded and naturalised elsewhere.

Nature and flavour. Sweet and sour, cold. Liver and Pericardium systems.

A blood mover that is also classed as cooling, which makes it the one reached for when the stasis is described as having heat in it. The sources credit it with quickening the blood and breaking stasis, cooling the blood and dispelling wind, and record it for amenorrhoea with abdominal masses, for fixed stabbing pain, for itchy wind rashes, and — the use that gets quoted most — for the red nose and papules of what the texts call 酒齄鼻, applied as a wash as well as taken. That external application is the milder half of the record, and it is the half a modern reader is more likely to encounter. The traditional internal uses are recorded; the modern clinical evidence for them is limited and is not established.

Safety. The strongest caution here is the classical one: this flower breaks blood, and the sources contraindicate it in pregnancy outright. It should not be used by anyone who is pregnant or trying to become pregnant, or who has heavy periods or a bleeding tendency, and adding it to warfarin or another anticoagulant or antiplatelet drug is not a self-care decision. There is a second, physical caution. Most people meet the fresh flower by handling it rather than eating it: the related American trumpet vine is documented as a cause of contact dermatitis, and the pollen and nectar of trumpet flowers irritate the eyes and the mucous membranes of anyone who brushes against or cuts them. Gloves and eye protection are the ordinary precautions for a gardener, and they have nothing to do with the traditional uses of the dried drug. Two species and more than one plant part circulate under the Chinese name, and only the dried flower of the named species is the standard item. Any use belongs under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, and this page deliberately does not say how much to take.
