Mulberry Fruit sāng shèn ·

Morus alba L. (fruit)

Nature and flavour. Sweet and sour, cold; Heart, Liver and Kidney systems.

Classed as nourishing Yin and supplementing blood, and as generating fluid and moistening dryness. In the classical framework it is used where Yin and blood are depleted — dizziness, tinnitus, early greying — and where fluid has dried up, with thirst and constipation. It is also a food, fresh and dried, and that is how most people meet it.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Cold in nature, so the tradition cautions against it where the Spleen and Stomach are cold with loose stool. Unripe fruit and large amounts of the fresh fruit have both been described as causing digestive upset. It is a fruit with a high natural sugar content when dried. Human safety data in pregnancy are insufficient beyond ordinary food amounts.
