Longan Aril lóng yǎn ròu ·

Dimocarpus longan Lour. (aril)

Nature and flavour. Sweet, warm; Heart and Spleen systems.

Classed as supplementing the Heart and Spleen and as nourishing blood and calming the spirit. It is the best known of the tonic herbs that is also an ordinary food: the dried aril is eaten as a sweet and simmered in congee and desserts, which is how most people meet it rather than through a clinic.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Sweet, warm and sticky in the classical description: the tradition cautions against it where there is internal phlegm-fire or where dampness is retained, and eating a lot of it is described as producing heat and constraining the digestion. It is a dried fruit with a high natural sugar content, so anyone monitoring their blood sugar should treat it as a sweet dried fruit rather than as a medicine. Safety in pregnancy is not established beyond ordinary food amounts.
