Bi Xie (Dioscorea Rhizome) bì xiè ·

Dioscorea hypoglauca or Dioscorea septemloba (rhizome)

Nature and flavour. Bitter, neutral; Kidney and Stomach systems.

Classically grouped with the herbs that separate the clear from the turbid, that is, with those used for cloudy or difficult urination, and with the herbs used for wind-damp painful obstruction. The texts add a caution of their own: it is not for kidney depletion, and that caution is repeated wherever the herb is discussed.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Several different yam species are sold under this name, most often as fen bi xie and mian bi xie, and the classical descriptions do not treat them as interchangeable; a person should not assume that a packet labelled bi xie is the plant a given text was describing. It is classically avoided in pregnancy and where there is kidney depletion. Its traditional uses are not established by modern research, and prolonged self-directed use of any damp-draining herb without professional review is a poor idea.
