Astringent drug (binding the intestines and stanching bleeding); a mineral drug

Limonite yǔ yú liáng ·

Limonitum — a mineral drug, an iron-bearing clay and hydrated iron oxide material traditionally identified as limonite, largely goethite mixed with clay and other oxides.

Nature and flavour. Sweet and astringent, neutral. Stomach and Large Intestine systems.

The second of the two mineral astringents, and usually discussed in the same breath as 赤石脂 — the two are the paired drugs of a well-known classical combination whose name is still current in Chinese practice. The sources record it for chronic diarrhoea, for the traditional picture of laxity with bleeding, and in the classical account also for the disorders grouped under vaginal discharge. Its traditional reputation is essentially that of a physical binding and covering agent, and like the other mineral drug its human evidence is limited and is not established. The famous classical pairing is a fact about the literature, not a usage recommendation.

Safety. It is iron. Anyone with haemochromatosis or iron overload must not take it, and anyone with a condition where iron loading matters should ask before using it. Beyond that it carries the ordinary risks of a mined mineral: associated heavy metals such as arsenic and lead, and other impurities, with cumulative exposure if it is taken long-term — it should not be taken long-term, and only tested material should be used. As an adsorbent it reduces the absorption of other oral medicines and must be separated from them by several hours; people on essential or narrow-window medicines should check with a pharmacist. Binding the bowel is wrong in constipation, in a dry stool, and where obstruction is possible. In pregnancy, in breastfeeding and in children it is not advisable. Where the two mineral drugs are combined in the classical formula, the mineral-exposure cautions apply to both together, not to either one alone.
