Astringent drug (binding the intestines, stanching bleeding, and promoting granulation); a mineral drug

Red Halloysite chì shí zhī ·

Halloysitum Rubrum — a clay mineral drug, predominantly the hydrated aluminium silicate halloysite with iron oxides giving the red colour; a processed red kaolin-type earth from natural deposits.

Nature and flavour. Sweet, sour and astringent, warm. Stomach and Large Intestine systems.

A clay used as a medicine, which is a category that surprises people and that deserves a plain description. The sources record it for chronic diarrhoea and for the traditional picture of laxity with bleeding from the lower digestive tract, and externally for sores that will not close and for weeping, non-healing lesions. Modern kaolin has a long history of exactly the same internal use in Western domestic practice, and the mechanism assumed for both is physical — adsorptive, protective, bulking — rather than pharmacological. The human evidence for the traditional indications is limited and is not established, and the external use is better supported by tradition than by trials.

Safety. A mineral, and the risks of minerals are the risks of what came out of the ground with them. Natural clay deposits can carry lead, arsenic, cadmium and other heavy metals, and crystalline silica; internal use over a long period is a cumulative exposure and the drug should not be taken long-term. Only material that has been tested should be used, and loose untested mineral powder from an informal source is the main hazard here. Clay is an adsorbent, so it reduces the absorption of other oral medicines — it must be separated from any other drug by several hours, and people on narrow-window medicines such as digoxin, or on any essential medicine, should ask a pharmacist first. Binding the bowel is wrong in constipation, in a dry stool, and where obstruction is a possibility; in pregnancy and in children it is not advisable. External use is comparatively safer but the material still has to be clean.
