Bush Cherry Seed yù lǐ rén ·

Semen Pruni — the dried ripe kernel of Prunus japonica Thunb. or Prunus humilis Bunge (family Rosaceae); a stone-fruit seed, from the same family as the apricot, the peach and the plum.

Nature and flavour. Acrid, bitter, sweet, neutral. Spleen, Large Intestine and Small Intestine systems.

The gentle branch of the purge category, and the one the sources reach for when the harsh cathartics are unsuitable: constipation in the elderly, after illness, after childbirth, and in anyone the texts describe as depleted. The kernel is oily, and the traditional reading is that the oil moistens a dry bowel rather than forcing it — the difference between 润下 and 攻下 is a real distinction in the literature, not a polite way of saying the same thing. The sources also record it for oedema and abdominal fullness, on the classical reasoning that it moves qi and promotes urination as well as opening the bowel; that reasoning is pre-modern and the claim is not established. The laxative action is usually attributed to the fixed oil in the seed. The kernel also contains amygdalin, and that is the safety problem rather than the mechanism.

Safety. Say the cyanide part first, because it is the part nobody expects from a mild laxative. This kernel, like the kernels of apricot, peach, cherry and plum, contains amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside: when the seed is crushed or chewed and the glycoside meets the enzymes in the same seed, hydrogen cyanide is liberated. The classic poisoning reports come from bitter apricot kernels eaten as a health food, and 苦杏仁 — the bitter apricot kernel — is a separate drug in this tradition with a stricter traditional handling. The lesson carries over. The seed is not a snack, it is not for children, and crushing it at home to eat by the spoonful is exactly the wrong thing to do; heating reduces the cyanogenic fraction but does not reliably remove it. Cyanide poisoning begins with headache, nausea, dizziness and rapid breathing, and it is an emergency, not something to sleep off. Then the ordinary laxative cautions: not in abdominal pain of unknown cause or suspected obstruction, not as a daily remedy, and chronic use brings the same dependence and electrolyte problems as any other laxative. The classical indications are not established.
