Damp-draining; strangury-relieving

Pyrrosia Leaf shí wéi · 石韦

Pyrrosiae Folium (Pyrrosia lingua (Thunb.) Farw. and allied species)

Nature and flavour. Sweet, bitter, slightly cold; Lung and Bladder systems.

Classically described as promoting urination and relieving strangury, cooling the blood and stopping bleeding, and clearing the Lung to calm cough. It is unusual among damp-draining herbs in reaching both the Lung and the Bladder, which is why the classical texts also record it for cough and for blood in the urine.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Slightly cold in nature; classically avoided where yin deficiency is present without damp-heat. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding — reliable human safety data are lacking. Several Pyrrosia species are used under the same name, so correct botanical identification matters. Blood in the urine always warrants medical assessment; it is not a symptom to interpret with a single herb.
