Kochiae Fructus (Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad.)

Nature and flavour. Acrid, bitter, cold; Kidney and Bladder systems.

Classically described as clearing damp-heat, promoting urination and relieving itching. It is one of the herbs the classical texts reach for in itchy skin eruptions attributed to damp-heat, and it is used both internally and as an external wash — the external use is the better-attested of the two.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Cold in nature; classically avoided where there is no damp-heat and in cold deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding — reliable human safety data are lacking. Allergic skin reactions are reported with the plant, and external use can irritate already broken skin; widespread or weeping rashes, or itch with fever, call for medical assessment rather than repeated washing.
