Mulberry Root Bark sāng bái pí · 桑白皮

Morus alba (Mori Cortex)

Nature and flavour. Sweet and cold; Lung system.

Traditionally classed as draining the Lung and calming wheezing, and as promoting urination to reduce swelling. Recorded for hot-type cough and panting with phlegm and heat in the Lung, and for oedema with reduced urine. Classical sources also name it for the thirst of 'wasting' presentations.

性味归经。甘，寒；归肺经。

传统归类为泻肺平喘、利水消肿。古籍用于肺热喘咳、痰热壅肺，以及水肿、小便不利；亦有用于消渴口渴的记载。

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.

Safety. Cold — classically unsuitable for cough of the cold type, or for Lung deficiency without heat. Its diuretic action has not been studied alongside prescription diuretics, so combining the two without supervision is not advisable, particularly for anyone with a heart or kidney condition. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established. Note the material is the root bark: it is not mulberry leaf (桑叶) or mulberry twig (桑枝), both of which are described differently in traditional sources.

性寒，传统认为寒咳与肺虚无热者不宜。其利水作用与处方利尿剂同用的情况未被研究，不宜在无人指导下合用，心、肾疾患者尤须谨慎。孕期与哺乳期安全性未确立。注意本品为根皮，与桑叶、桑枝并非同一药材，传统记载各有不同。
