Phlegm-resolving, cough and breathing; classically toxic

Datura Flower yáng jīn huā ·

Datura metel L. (Daturae Flos)

Nature and flavour. Pungent and warm, listed as toxic in the classical materia medica; Lung and Liver systems.

Traditionally classed as calming breathing and stopping cough, and as relieving spasm and pain. It is recorded for wheezing and cough, for cold pain in the stomach and abdomen, for painful obstruction attributed to wind-damp, and for pain from injury. Its most distinctive place in the classical literature is anaesthesia: datura appears in the surgical anaesthetic recipes recorded from the classical period onwards, and the composition of the famous early anaesthetic formula is attributed to it by later writers — an attribution that is inference rather than established fact, and is recorded here as such. The drug is a solanaceous flower; the whole plant, and the seed in particular, contains the same tropane alkaloids as the flower.

Safety. This is the most dangerous entry in this batch and it is not a household herb in any sense. It contains atropine-type alkaloids, principally hyoscyamine and scopolamine, and anticholinergic poisoning follows a well-described course: dry mouth, intense thirst, dilated pupils and blurred vision, flushed dry skin, fever, rapid heartbeat, difficulty passing urine, restlessness, confusion, hallucinations, delirium, seizures, coma and respiratory depression. Deaths are recorded, including deaths in children who ate the flowers or seeds, and the amount that causes harm varies between individuals and between plants. The risk is higher, and the consequences worse, in glaucoma, in prostatic enlargement with difficulty urinating, and in existing heart disease. Effects add to those of any other drug with anticholinergic action. Never use it yourself; it is a prescription and controlled medicine in the jurisdictions that recognise it, it has no place in home or folk preparation, and any suspected exposure is an emergency. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established. Do not confuse it with the ornamental Brugmansia or with other solanaceous flowers sold under similar names.
