Blood-invigorating (stasis-breaking); classically listed as slightly toxic

Ground Beetle (Eupolyphaga) tǔ biē chóng ·

Eupolyphaga sinensis

Nature and flavour. Salty, cold; listed as slightly toxic in the classical materia medica; Liver system.

An insect drug classed as breaking up blood stasis and as knitting sinew and bone back together. Classical sources describe it for fixed, stabbing pain and for injury to the sinews and bones, and it is a standard presence in trauma and bone-setting formulae; it is also described for amenorrhoea and for abdominal masses attributed to blood stasis. Modern clinical evidence for these uses is limited and is not established.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Classically listed as slightly toxic. The tradition is explicit that it is avoided in pregnancy — the classical reason given is that it breaks blood. Not for anyone with a bleeding tendency, and a documented interaction concern exists with warfarin and other anticoagulants. Allergy to insect proteins is a real concern. This is not a self-care herb; any use belongs under the supervision of a qualified practitioner.
