Sweet Wormwood qīng hāo ·

Artemisiae Annuae Herba (Artemisia annua L.)

Nature and flavour. Bitter, acrid, cold; Liver and Gallbladder systems.

Classically described as clearing deficiency heat, relieving the sensation of heat deep in the bones, cooling summer heat, resolving jaundice and checking the paroxysms of malarial illness. The antimalarial compound artemisinin was isolated from this plant, which is the single most substantial modern finding attached to any Chinese herb.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. The crude herb is not a standard antimalarial remedy: suspected malaria is an emergency that needs proper diagnosis and standard care, and nothing in this entry is advice on that. Bitter and cold — classically avoided in cold-type deficiency of the Stomach and Spleen. Classically avoided in pregnancy, and animal data raise concern; avoid in breastfeeding. Allergy is possible in people sensitive to the daisy family. Nausea and digestive upset have been reported.
