Turmeric Rhizome jiāng huáng ·

Curcuma longa (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma)

Nature and flavour. Acrid, bitter and warm; Liver and Spleen systems.

The same plant that supplies the everyday kitchen spice, and separately a classical drug for moving blood and qi to ease pain. Classical sources record it for stabbing chest and flank pain, for amenorrhoea attributed to blood stasis, for painful menstruation, and for wind-damp pain of the shoulder and arm; it is also applied externally in classical practice to swellings and sprains.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Avoid in pregnancy. Not advisable with bile-duct obstruction or gallstones without a medical assessment first. Rare but genuine reports exist of liver injury from concentrated curcumin supplements — this page does not claim culinary turmeric carries the same risk, and the two are not interchangeable because the supplement is a concentrated extract, not the spice. Curcumin is known to affect anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicine, and the interaction picture is not fully mapped, so combining them unsupervised is not advisable.
