Blood-invigorating drug (quickening the blood and supplementing the blood); traditionally also classed as freeing the channels and relaxing the sinews

Spatholobus Vine jī xuè téng ·

Caulis Spatholobi — Spatholobus suberectus Dunn (family Fabaceae), the dried vine stem. The common name refers to the red sap that oozes from a cut stem.

Nature and flavour. Bitter and sweet, warm. Liver and Kidney systems.

The one blood mover whose classical reputation includes blood deficiency and not only stasis. The sources describe it as quickening the blood and supplementing the blood at the same time, regulating the menses, freeing the channels and relaxing the sinews, and it is recorded for irregular or scanty menstruation, for amenorrhoea described as blood deficiency with stasis, for a sallow complexion and the vague aching that the texts attribute to blood failing to nourish the sinews, and for numbness, stiff joints and the limb weakness that follows wind-stroke in the traditional account. It is also a common ingredient in contemporary Chinese hospital practice, where it appears in compounds given alongside conventional treatment; that is a clinical decision for the treating team, and the evidence supporting it is limited and is not established.

Safety. A blood mover with a mild reputation, and that reputation is exactly why it gets used casually; it is still a drug. Avoided in pregnancy in the classical sources, and the same caution applies in breastfeeding because the evidence simply is not there. Anyone with heavy or prolonged periods, with a bleeding tendency, or taking warfarin or another anticoagulant or antiplatelet drug should not add a blood-moving herb on their own. The trade name is the practical hazard: several genera — Spatholobus, Millettia, Mucuna and others — are sold as 鸡血藤 in different regions, and only Spatholobus suberectus is the standard item; a package labelled with the Chinese name alone is not a reliable identification. Injectable preparations exist in Chinese hospital practice and are not the same product as the dried vine: injectable herbal preparations have their own adverse-reaction record and belong nowhere outside a hospital. The traditional uses above are recorded; the modern clinical evidence for them is limited and is not established. Any use belongs under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, and this page deliberately does not say how much to take.
