Tonifying (food-grade)

Honey fēng mì ·

Apis cerana / Apis mellifera (honey)

Nature and flavour. Sweet, neutral; Spleen, Stomach, Lung and Large Intestine systems.

Both a food and a materia medica substance placed with the tonics. The traditional categories are supplementing the middle, moistening dryness, easing pain and countering toxin; it is also used to bind pills and to round out the taste of other herbs.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Never give honey to an infant under 12 months — it can contain Clostridium botulinum spores that cause infant botulism. This is a firm rule, not a precaution. Honey is also a concentrated sugar, which matters in diabetes and in any sugar-restricted diet, and it can trigger reactions in people sensitive to pollen or bee products.
