Pipewort Flower gǔ jīng cǎo ·

Eriocauli Flos (Eriocaulon buergerianum Koern.)

Nature and flavour. Acrid, sweet, neutral; Liver and Lung systems.

Classically described as dispersing wind-heat, brightening the eyes and removing superficial corneal opacity. It belongs to the small group of herbs used for eye complaints rather than to general heat-clearing, and the classical texts pair it with redness, tearing and a sensation of grit.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Neutral and traditionally regarded as mild, but reliable human safety data are lacking. Classically avoided where eye complaints are attributed to blood deficiency rather than wind-heat. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Lasting eye pain, or any change in vision, needs an eye examination — these are not always a matter of wind-heat.
