Garlic dà suàn ·

Allii Sativi Bulbus (Allium sativum L. — the bulb)

Nature and flavour. Acrid, warm. Spleen, Stomach and Lung systems.

The one item in this batch that everybody already owns. Garlic is a food first and a drug second, and the classical texts treat it that way: they describe it as counteracting toxin, killing parasites, reducing swelling and checking dysentery, and record it externally for boils, sores and ringworm, and internally for intestinal parasites and for diarrhoea. It is also among the most-studied plants in the world, and the honest summary of that research is narrower than the reputation. Allicin and the related sulfur compounds are well characterised and the laboratory activity is real and broad; the human evidence is mixed and generally modest — small effects, inconsistent between studies, and rarely of a size that would change what a person ought to do. The classical sources excluded it where there is yin deficiency with heat and in complaints of the eye, and they were already warning that it irritates. It is safe as a food and much less predictable as a medicine.

Safety. As a food, garlic is safe for most people. As a skin application it is not: raw garlic held against the skin is a documented cause of chemical burns, sometimes full-thickness, and the cases in the literature are usually people who applied it as a home remedy and left it on — often under a dressing, which makes it worse, and often on a child. Do not strap raw garlic to the skin, and do not leave it on for hours. As a medicine taken by mouth, three cautions matter. It thins the blood in a way that interacts with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicines, and it should be stopped well before planned surgery — tell the surgeon rather than deciding alone. It can lower blood sugar, which matters alongside diabetes medicines. And it reduces the blood levels of certain antiretroviral medicines, an interaction that is documented rather than theoretical. Medicinal amounts also disturb the stomach, and the classical cautions about yin deficiency with heat and about complaints of the eye belong here too. Culinary amounts in pregnancy and breastfeeding are food; concentrated preparations are a different matter. A boil that is spreading, a sore that will not heal, or either of them with a fever needs care rather than a poultice.
