Dafupi (Areca Husk) dà fù pí ·

Areca catechu (pericarp)

Nature and flavour. Pungent, slightly warm; Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine and Small Intestine systems.

Grouped with the herbs that move Qi and ease the middle, and with those that promote urination to reduce swelling. The name describes the material: it is the husk of the areca fruit, not the seed. The traditional uses are categories recorded in the literature and are not established by modern research.

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. The association a reader should know about: the seed of this same palm is bing lang, and habitual chewing of areca is linked to oral submucous fibrosis and to oral cancer. That is a warning about the seed as a masticatory, not a demonstrated risk of the husk as a herb, and this entry does not claim the two are the same. It does mean that anyone buying by the Chinese name should be clear which part of the fruit they have. Classically avoided where Qi is depleted, and in pregnancy. No amount is given here.
