Ampelopsis Root bái liǎn · 白蔹

Ampelopsis Radix (Ampelopsis japonica (Thunb.) Makino)

Nature and flavour. Bitter, slightly cold; Heart and Stomach systems.

Classically described as clearing heat and relieving toxicity, reducing swelling and pain, and astringing to stop bleeding. It is chiefly applied to sores, boils, burns and scalds, and most of its traditional use is topical.

性味归经。苦，微寒；归心、胃经。

传统记载为清热解毒、消肿止痛、收敛止血。主要用于疮痈肿毒、烧烫伤，传统用法以外用居多。

Classical category · no formulas, no dosages, no herb-drug combinations are given.
Safety. Mostly a topical herb; reliable human safety data for internal use are insufficient, so it should not be taken on one's own. The classical incompatibility lists pair it with Aconitum, and that pairing is a traditional rule rather than a modern toxicology finding — it is recorded here as a matter of the source texts. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Deep, spreading or clearly infected wounds, and any burn more than superficial, need medical care rather than a herbal wash.
