Safety. Tai Shan Pan Shi San comes from Jingyue Quanshu, in the gynaecology section, and the name is a promise: firm as the bedrock of Mount Tai. Read against Ba Zhen Tang its construction is legible. It is the eight-treasure base with poria removed, and with astragalus, dipsacus, scutellaria, amomum and glutinous rice added. Read against Shi Quan Da Bu Tang it is more interesting still: the hot cassia bark comes out and scutellaria, a cold herb, goes in, and amomum goes in to keep the whole thing moving. The classical commentary explains the swap as a matter of the recipient rather than the disease - a pregnancy is a state that the older sources treat as carrying its own heat, so a warming herb that suits depleted qi in general is taken out and a clearing herb is put in its place. Zhang Jiebin's own framing is that the fetus is held by the mother's qi and blood, so the way to hold it is to supplement them. This is the entry in this library where the gap between the classical claim and modern medicine is widest, and it should be stated without softening. Recurrent pregnancy loss has a modern differential, and parts of it are treatable in ways that supplementation is not. Chromosomal abnormality of the embryo is among the most common causes of early loss. Antiphospholipid syndrome is the one that matters most clinically, because it is a diagnosed condition with a treatment that works: low-molecular-weight heparin with low-dose aspirin changes the live-birth rate. Uterine anatomical abnormalities, cervical insufficiency, thyroid disease, uncontrolled diabetes, hyperprolactinaemia and thrombophilia make up much of the rest. Calling that picture qi and blood deficiency and supplementing it is not a neutral act, because it spends the window in which one of those causes could have been found and treated. This library does not say the formula prevents miscarriage. It says the classical indication is what the classical sources say it is, and that a modern workup comes first. Three further points. Vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain in early pregnancy is not a pattern to sort by formula before an intrauterine pregnancy has been confirmed, and ectopic pregnancy is the reason: it can rupture, it is measured in hours, and it is a surgical emergency. Ginseng, ligusticum and angelica are all herbs with real cautions in pregnancy, chuan xiong specifically being a blood-moving herb that traditional sources argue about. Scutellaria has published case reports of liver injury, uncommon but documented. Honey-fried licorice is in the formula, and a Finnish cohort study has linked heavy maternal consumption of licorice confectionery during pregnancy to earlier delivery and to cognitive outcomes in the children - that was food-level intake rather than medicine, but it is a reminder that glycyrrhizin is not an inert sweetness. Dipsacus root and amomum are both sold under names that cover more than one material. Glutinous rice is a food grain and a carbohydrate load. No herb during pregnancy, including this one, should be taken without the obstetric team knowing. This library gives no pregnancy management advice.
