Safety. This formula contains rhubarb (大黄), a stimulant laxative whose anthraquinones cause abdominal cramps and diarrhoea; prolonged use has been associated with potassium loss and with dependence on laxatives, and it is unsuitable where intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease or abdominal pain of unknown cause is present, and in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pinellia (半夏) in its raw form is irritant and recorded as toxic; the material used in formulas is processed, and it is traditionally avoided in pregnancy. Immature bitter orange (枳实) contains synephrine-type amines, which has prompted caution in cardiovascular conditions and with stimulant medicines. Licorice raises blood pressure and lowers potassium when taken in quantity or long term. The claims recorded for this formula are classical, not established by controlled research.
