Gua Sha is one of the few TCM practices that needs no needle and no herbs — just a smooth-edged tool and oil. Search interest exploded in the last few years, but much of it is cosmetic. This page explains what the technique actually is, what the marks mean, and where the honest limits are.
In TCM, gua sha is a surface technique that works along the channels (经络) and over muscle. A tool is pressed and stroked in one direction over oiled skin to raise petechiae — tiny broken capillaries that look like a rash or bruise. The traditional reading is that this "releases" a stuck or heat-loaded area; the modern reading is more modest: a form of instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilisation with a strong placebo and expectancy component.
The best-known study is a small 2007 trial in chronic neck pain that found gua sha reduced pain compared with a control, with effects lasting days. The literature is small and mostly on pain and muscle soreness — promising but not large. WHO-listed acupuncture indications are a different family of evidence; do not read them as proof for scraping.

If a hands-on or traditional therapy interests you, look for a licensed practitioner in your area (in many countries they are registered with a national acupuncture or TCM council), tell them your full medical history and medication list, and keep your regular clinician in the loop.
