The Complete Cloud Migration Checklist for 2026

Migrating to the cloud is a project, not a single command. Use this checklist to move workloads safely, with clear milestones and no downtime surprises.

Phase 1: Inventory and classify

List every server, database, storage volume, cron job and third-party integration. Classify each workload as keep-as-is, right-size, or decommission — most companies find 10-20% of their estate can be retired.

Record current resource usage (CPU, memory, disk, bandwidth) over two weeks so you can size cloud instances from real data, not guesswork.

Phase 2: Design the target architecture

Decide the region and availability zone strategy first. For production, use at least two availability zones when the budget allows.

Map dependencies: which services talk to which, what the latency budget is, and where the database lives. Design for the database to be the last thing migrated, with replication in place before the switch.

Phase 3: Security and compliance before the move

Create the cloud account with MFA, use RAM/role-based access instead of root keys, and enable audit logging from day one. Define security groups to be least-privilege.

Check data residency and compliance requirements for your industry. Export or back up certificates, secrets and configuration before you start.

Phase 4: Test migration and cutover

Do a full rehearsal at least once: replicate the database, spin up the environment, test your application end to end, then tear it down.

On cutover day, freeze writes to the old environment, take a final backup, synchronize the last delta, switch DNS with a short TTL, and monitor both environments until stability is confirmed.

Phase 5: Post-migration optimization

After two weeks of production data, review actual utilization and adjust instance sizes. Set up cost alerts and a monthly review so the bill stays predictable.

Enable monitoring and alerting for CPU, memory, disk, bandwidth and application-level health, and document runbooks for common incidents.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a cloud migration take?

A small website can move in a weekend. A production system with databases and integrations typically takes 2-8 weeks including rehearsals. The database and third-party integrations are almost always the critical path.

How do I avoid downtime?

Use database replication, keep a rollback plan, switch DNS gradually (start with a low TTL), and never delete the old environment until the new one has been stable for at least two weeks.

What is the most common mistake?

Underestimating data transfer time and skipping the rehearsal. Both cause the majority of failed migrations. Measure real data volume early and rehearse the full cutover at least once.
